A critical review of decision support systems for brownfield redevelopment

Over the past two decades, many decision support systems (DSSs) have been developed to makers and facilitate planning redevelopment process of brownfields. Existing are however often siloed in their approach do not fully capture complexity brownfield sites from a sustainable development point view. This critical review provides an insight into implementation DSSs, published emerging, together with assessment strengths, limitations opportunities for future integration. Brownfields DSS applications include: remediation technology selection; land use planning; risk assessment. The results this lead authors identify four improve DSSs: (i) increased qualitative socioeconomic criteria, particularly costs economic variables, (ii) decision-support during early stages redevelopment, (iii) integration predictive modelling methods, (iv) improvements user interfaces modern web-based functionalities.
